What is the principle of EOR?
The principle of EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) is based on the use of various recovery methods to increase the amount of oil that can be extracted from a reservoir. This is achieved by injecting gases or liquid chemicals and/or using thermal energy to enhance the recovery process. The injected gases or liquid chemicals can enter the reservoir and modify the oil's properties, allowing it to flow more easily towards the production well. This process results in an increase in the amount of oil that can be recovered from the reservoir.
The injected gases used in EOR processes include hydrocarbon gases, such as natural gas or propane, CO2, nitrogen, and flue gases. These gases mix with the oil in the reservoir and reduce its viscosity, allowing it to flow more easily towards the production well. In addition to gases, a number of liquid chemicals are commonly used in EOR processes. These include polymers, surfactants, and hydrocarbon solvents. The polymers enhance the viscosity of the oil and help it to flow more easily towards the production well. Surfactants reduce the surface tension between the oil and water in the reservoir, allowing the oil to separate more easily from the water. Hydrocarbon solvents mix with the oil and reduce its viscosity, allowing it to flow more easily towards the production well.
The use of thermal energy in EOR processes involves heating the reservoir to increase the temperature and pressure, which lowers the viscosity of the oil and allows it to flow more easily towards the production well. Thermal energy can be provided by various sources, such as steam injection or in situ combustion.
